The river

The Miño River is located in the northwestern end of the Iberian Peninsula.It is the most important and abundant in Galicia and one of the largest in the Iberian Peninsula.

 

Born in Pedregal de Irimia (Lugo), about 700 meters high. It has318km longand in the last 78 km it acts as a border between Spain and Portugal. At its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean it forms an important estuary. Its most important tributary is the Sil River.
 

The origin of its name is highly disputed, but it most likely comes from pre-Indo-European hydronyms.

Hydrography

The hydrographic basinIt has an extension of 17,048 km2, divided between Spain (95%) and Portugal (5%). It has ahydrographic network of more than 23 thousand kilometers

Geology and geomorphology

The orography is varied and complex, defined by the variety and geological activity and by the erosive action of the rivers. The average altitude of the entire basin is 714 meters above sea level..

Biogeography and climate

It is an area of abundant and regular rains (average 1,200 mm per year) and mild temperatures (average 10-11 ºC). There is a great biogeographical diversity, in which deciduous forests and moorland and scrub areas stand out.
