sea trout

Species anadromous, pelagic y euryhaline. There are two subspecies of trout in the Miño river, sea trout (psalm trutta trutta) is the migratory form and the fario trout (psalm trutta fario) is the sedentary form. In the Miño River their diet is diversified, eating crustaceans, insects, gastropods and fish. It is common in summer for larger specimens to enter, seeking cold and oxygenated waters in winter to reproduce. The minors spend 1 to 2 years in the river before migrating to the sea. It is a highly appreciated species by recreational and sport fishermen.

It is one of the most appreciated native fish that we can find in the Miño River.

Morfología

Morphology

Fusiform body, rounded caudal peduncle and adipose fin with orange margin. The dorsal fin has 8 to 10 rays, anal 12 to 18, and caudal 18 to 19 rays. The spinal column is made up of 57-59 vertebrae. When fresh from the sea, they are easily distinguished from river trout (psalm trutta fario) due to its silvery appearance and small dark spots. After spending time in fresh water they darken, making it the most difficult distinction. Young trout are distinguished from salmon by the presence of 9-10 blue-gray spots and a red spot between each. They have less than 130 scales on the lateral line and the number of scales between the adipose fin and the lateral line varies between 13-16.

this fishcan reach up to 140 cm and a weight of 20 kg, however, its length generally varies between 23 cm and 57 cm. It can live for 38 years. Similar species are river trout (Salmo trutta cold) and theSalmon (salt salm).

As with salmon, its average length has also decreased, with specimens weighing 300-600 grams being caught commonly, which implies less recruitment.

Biología

biology

Speciesanadromous, pelagic and euryhaline.

They return to the river where they were born to reproduce, undergoing physical changes during this phase, including jaw deformation and color intensification.

The largest specimens (0.8-1 Kg) begin the ascent of the river in summer (September) while in February the migration of smaller ones is common. They prefer cold and well-oxygenated waters for laying. Reproduction occurs between September and December. They can reproduce more than once during their life cycle. Fingerlings grow rapidly in cool, well-oxygenated water. They remain for 1 to 2 years before migrating to the sea.

Distribución

Distribution

It is distributed by rivers and tributaries of cold, clean and well oxygenated waters, estuaries and coastal waters.

Conservación

Conservation

Species autochthonous. Habitat limited by the existence of dams that prevent their migration upstream. They are very sensitive to changes in water quality.
